When you fall asleep at night, it feels like one single, continuous state – as if you simply switch "off" and resurface hours later. In fact, a surprising amount happens in that time. Your sleep doesn't run evenly; it moves through stages that alternate several times a night. And one of them is the stage where your most vivid dreams take shape.

The sleep stages at a glance

Broadly, sleep can be divided into two large areas: non-REM sleep (with several stages) and REM sleep. Over the night, you move through them in a recurring sequence.

  • Falling-asleep stage. The transition from being awake into sleep. The muscles relax, thoughts slow down. This stage is short and light – a single sound is often enough to wake you again.
  • Light sleep. You're more clearly gone now, but not yet deep. Heartbeat and breathing grow calmer. Most people spend the largest part of the night in this stage.
  • Deep sleep. The most restorative stage for the body. Here you're hardest to wake, and the body uses the time to recover. Deep sleep is most pronounced in the first half of the night.
  • REM sleep. The stage where most and most intense dreams arise. We'll give it its own section shortly.

This order isn't a rigid scheme – sleep is a little different for everyone. But the basic pattern is similar for most people.

What happens in the body during each stage

The stages differ not only in how deeply you sleep, but also in what's going on inside you at the time.

In light sleep, the body slowly powers down: body temperature drops slightly, the heartbeat slows, the muscles let go. It's a kind of transition zone, where you move back and forth between the deeper stages.

In deep sleep, much of the body's physical recovery takes place. The body works quietly and steadily during this time, breathing and pulse at their lowest. Many people experience exactly this sleep as the "most valuable" – and indeed, you feel unrested when it falls short.

In REM sleep, the picture flips: the brain becomes very active again, while the body is at the same time largely "switched off" – a natural protective function so you don't act out your dreams. This coexistence of a wakeful mind and a resting body is what makes REM special.

REM sleep: the stage of dreams

REM stands for "Rapid Eye Movement." That's exactly what can be observed in this stage: behind closed lids, the eyes move, while the rest of the body stays largely still.

What's special: during REM sleep, your brain is almost as active as when you're awake. That's why dreams here are usually the most vivid, the most image-rich, and the most likely to be remembered – especially if you wake directly from a REM stage. So if you wake in the morning with an intense, almost film-like dream, you were probably right in the middle of REM sleep.

This connection is also why dreams and sleep belong so closely together: without REM sleep, there would hardly be the striking nightly stories that occupy us in the morning.

Why the stages repeat in cycles

You don't move through these stages just once, but in cycles – a complete run lasts roughly an hour and a half, and over the night it repeats several times.

What's interesting is how the balance shifts: in the first half of the night, deep sleep dominates – the body takes its deep recovery first. Toward morning, the REM stages grow longer and more frequent. That explains why you often remember the dreams just before waking best – they're the closest in time and arise in longer REM windows.

How many cycles do you need per night?

For most people, about four to six such cycles line up over a night. Each cycle blends the stages a little differently – more deep sleep early on, more REM later.

This also explains a familiar feeling: when the alarm tears you out of the middle of deep sleep, you often feel groggy, even though you actually slept for a long time. If, on the other hand, you wake at the end of a cycle – closer to light sleep – getting up is noticeably easier. So it's not only about how long, but also which stage you're woken in. What this means for your dreams

If you'd like to understand your dreams better, it helps to know when they arise. The most intense dreams come from the REM stages – and those are longest toward morning. That's exactly why you have the best chance of remembering a dream right after waking: the last, often longest REM stage is then still fresh within you.
